First Day of Pre-K and Kindergarten: The Essentials Worth Getting Before August

The first drop-off is a whole thing.

You spend weeks telling them it will be great. You practice walking in. You read the books about starting school. And then you watch them walk away without looking back, whether it is down the hall to their classroom or up the steps of the bus, and somehow you are the one who needs a minute.

Before that day comes, there are a handful of things worth picking up. Not a full school shopping list. Just the ones that actually make a difference for the Pre-K and Kindergarten years specifically.

The First Day Photo Moment

The first day of Pre-K or Kindergarten is one of the most photographed days of your child's life. These are the things that make that photo worth saving.

First Day of School Sign Board

A reusable chalkboard sign with fill-in categories: name, age, grade, what they want to be when they grow up. You fill it in together the night before and they hold it for the photo. We have used ours every year since Pre-K and the progression of answers is genuinely one of the best things we have saved.

First Day of School Pennant Flag

Felt, simple, and photographs beautifully. Prop it in the photo or hang it in their room after. This one comes pre-printed so there is nothing to do except hold it.

💡 Tip

Take the photo before you leave the house, not at school drop-off. Lighting is better, no one is crying yet, and you actually have a second to compose it.

The Backpack

Simple Modern Disney Kids Backpack

The right backpack for Pre-K and Kindergarten is one they can open and close independently. This one has one main compartment, a front pocket, and straps that are actually sized for a small frame. The Disney prints have held up through a full school year without the design fading or cracking.

💡 Tip

For Pre-K especially, avoid backpacks with a lot of zippers. One main zipper they can work themselves is all they need at this age.

If the first day is also the start of a new school-year routine, our back-to-school morning routine covers exactly how to make those early weeks less chaotic.

The Water Bottle

Owala Kids Water Bottle

Owala makes the best kids water bottles because the lid is actually spill-resistant and small hands can open it without help. The insulation keeps water cold through a full school day. Get the 14oz for Pre-K, 16oz for Kindergarten and up.

The Lunch Prep Extras

This is the section people screenshot and send to other parents. These are not strictly necessary. They are also the things that make your kid excited to open their lunchbox, and at this age that matters.

Uncrustable Sandwich Maker

Seals the edges of a sandwich and cuts it into a shape at the same time. Heart, star, and other shapes are available. Takes about five seconds and results in a sandwich that looks intentional. Kids who will not touch crusts will actually eat these.

Grape Cutter

Pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms still ask you to cut grapes in half. This does all of them in one press. Whole grapes go in, halved grapes come out in two seconds. If you have a small child you already know why this tool exists.

Strawberry and Fruit Slicer

Same idea, made for strawberries and larger fruit. Detachable pieces so it is actually easy to clean. If strawberries go into lunchboxes more than twice a week in your house, you will use this every single time.

Good to know

All three of these live in our kitchen drawer and get used more than almost any gadget we own. The grape slicer alone has probably saved fifteen minutes a week over the course of a school year.

School Supplies

Ticonderoga My First Triangular Pencils

Made for small hands learning to grip. Triangular so they do not roll off the desk, wider than standard pencils so the grip comes more naturally. Most Pre-K and Kindergarten supply lists specify a fat pencil or beginner pencil. These are the best version of that.

Once the first week is behind you, a weekly chore chart for kids by age is a good next step. Kindergarteners can absolutely start with one or two simple tasks, and having a chart makes it real for them.
